# Grammar Lesson Plan: Derivations
### Grade Level: Primary 6
---
### Objective:
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to understand and identify derivations in English grammar, specifically focusing on prefixes and suffixes, and how they change the meaning of root words.
### Duration:
1 Hour
### Materials Needed:
- Whiteboard and markers
- Printed worksheets with exercises
- Flashcards with root words, prefixes, and suffixes
- Chart paper for group activity
- Fact sheets with common prefixes and suffixes
---
### Lesson Outline:
1. **Introduction: (10 minutes)**
- Greet the students and remind them of the importance of vocabulary in effective communication.
- Introduce the topic "Derivations" by writing the word on the whiteboard.
- Briefly explain that derivations involve adding prefixes and suffixes to root words to change their meaning or grammatical function.
2. **Direct Instruction: (15 minutes)**
- **Prefixes:**
- Define a prefix and provide examples, e.g., "un-", "re-", "pre-", "dis-", etc.
- Write examples on the board:
- "happy" → "unhappy"
- "write" → "rewrite"
- "view" → "preview"
- Ask students for additional examples and discuss them.
- **Suffixes:**
- Define a suffix and provide examples, e.g., "-ness", "-ful", "-less", "-ly", "-able", etc.
- Write examples on the board:
- "happy" → "happiness"
- "care" → "careful"
- "use" → "useless"
- Ask students for additional examples and discuss them.
3. **Guided Practice: (15 minutes)**
- Distribute worksheets with root words listed. Have students form new words by adding appropriate prefixes and suffixes. Examples could include:
- "play" → "player", "playful", "replay", etc.
- "friend" → "friendly", "unfriendly", etc.
- Walk around the class, providing assistance and guidance.
4. **Group Activity: (10 minutes)**
- Divide students into groups of four. Provide each group with a set of flashcards containing root words, prefixes, and suffixes.
- Each group will create new words by combining root words with the prefixes and suffixes on their flashcards. They should write these new words on chart paper and share them with the class.
5. **Individual Practice: (5 minutes)**
- Have students complete a quick exercise individually. Provide them with sentences where they need to fill in the blanks with the correct derivative forms. Example:
- "She looked very ______ (happy) when she heard the news."
- "I need to ______ (write) my essay because I made many mistakes."
6. **Review and Wrap-up: (5 minutes)**
- Summarize key points covered in the lesson.
- Reiterate how derivations can change the meaning and usage of words.
- Address any questions or confusions from students.
7. **Homework:**
- Assign a worksheet where students need to identify and use prefixes and suffixes to form new words from the given root words.
---
### Assessment:
- Monitor students' participation and responses during guided and group activities.
- Check the individual practice exercise to assess each student’s understanding.
- Evaluate completed homework for mastery of the concept.
---
### Additional Notes:
- Encourage students to use dictionaries to explore more prefixes and suffixes.
- Plan a follow-up lesson to delve deeper into less common prefixes and suffixes or to start on compound words.
